Production has begun on Vitrerie Joyal, a new series for Prime Video that comes from Quebecois comedian Martin Matte.

The comedy-drama takes place in the heart of Quebec in the ’90s, a period when the province was grappling between tradition and modernity. The series follows a first-generation Quebec entrepreneur, who started from nothing and built a prosperous business. His story reveals the ambition, hope and disillusionment of the era.

Vitrerie Joyal will be filmed entirely in Montreal between May and July, with Matte starring in the lead role, which is inspired by his father. The cast and crew will be made up of local talent. The production team include cover 150 actors and members of the Quebec film industry.

The series is written by Matte in collaboration with François Avard. It is co-produced by Encore and Matte TV for Amazon MGM Studios.

“This project is very personal and important to me,” Matte said. “I’m thrilled to bring this story, inspired by my father’s life, to life. Vitrerie Joyal will be a dramatic comedy, and even very dramatic in parts. I’ve rarely drawn so deeply within myself to write. I’m thrilled to be working with Prime Video to share this tale of a quintessentially Quebec family with audiences.”

Vitrerie Joyal is a funny, poignant and locally-relevant story that represents Prime Video’s ongoing commitment to our Quebec audience,” commented Brent Haynes, head of originals for Canada at Amazon MGM Studios. “Martin Matte is a uniquely talented and brilliant creator whose vision and personal connection to this story will deliver a series that’s both joyful entertainment and authenticity to our viewers.”
